Double Blueberry Crostata from Domenica Cooks

Double Blueberry Crostata from Domenica Cooks

At the very beginning of the month food bloggers focused on one theme – pies. Started by Shauna from Gluten-Free Girl and The Chef (their cookbook is great, by the way), hundreds of bloggers posted their best pie recipes. And as a fan of all things sweet and delicious, I read through a large portion of them. Here are 10 of my favorite recipes from the #PieParty.

1. Double Blueberry Crostata
Domenica Cooks put together something creative and delicious. She merged a traditional Italian jam crostata (think rustic tart) with the makings of blueberry pie – real berries and jam together with lemon zest and all that goodness. Get Domenica’s how-to and recipe for the Double Blueberry Crostada on her blog.

2. Summertime Rhubarb Cream Slab Pie
Rhubarb may be a traditional summer food, but I loved this twist on a traditional rhubarb pie. Smith Bites developed this great recipe for a less messy, more portable, better for sharing at big gatherings version and I plan to use it at an upcoming family picnic. You should, too.

3. Peach Blackberry Mini Pies
If these adorable mini pies don’t have dinner party written all over them, I don’t know what does. Tiny and sweet, you can get the recipe for Peach Blackberry Mini Pies over at Dash of East.

4. Mango Coconut Cream Pie
We’ll let Hungry Rabbit’s description of its pie speak for itself: “This Mango Coconut Cream Pie combines the creamy textures of mango mousse and coconut custard. The sliced mango on top gives it a nice boost of freshness and intensity. When someone hands you mangoes, Mango Coconut Cream Pie is the answer.” I couldn’t agree more. Get the recipe on the Hungry Rabbit blog.

5. Peach Blueberry Pie
This one is great for the all-American feel: peaches, blueberries and a lattice-work top. Get the recipe from Honey & Jam.

6. Mixed Berry and Lemon Verbena Pie
One of the nice things about Tartlette’s recipe for the Mixed Berry and Lemon Verbena Pie is the option to make it with or without gluten. (Mostly it’s a switch to rice and millet flours instead of the standard all-purpose, but I appreciated it nonetheless.) Regardless of which route you go on the crust, this fresh and citrusy blend is a delight.

Peaches7. Tequila Peach Galette
We learn two things in Not Without Salt’s post on creating her Tequila Peach Galette. 1. Her grandmother taught her early on to use oil instead of butter in those pie crusts. 2. You’ve just got to trust her on the merger of tequila and peaches, because it works. The recipe follows her excellent story about making pie with her grandmother. Both are worth the read.

8. Crème Fraiche Lemon Pie
Fresh, creamy and with a subtle zing, Flour on My Face’s recipe for Crème Fraiche Lemon Pie is worth a trial run in the kitchen.

9. Cherry Pies in a Jar
There is something distinctly summer-y about pies in a jar. Take a peek at With Style & Grace’s recipe for Cherry Pies in a Jar.

10. Sweet Potato Pie
While most of the Nambé team works out of our Santa Fe, NM, office, a few of us call Texas home. And just about any southern woman will tell you, sweet potato pie is a food staple around here. So, while I can’t resist the berry and cream goodness of the above pies, I’d be remiss if I left of this tantalizing recipe for a down-home favorite. Dig into the Sweet Potato Pie recipe from Delightful Repast. You’ll thank me.

Feel free to share your favorites from the Pie Party in the comments, and we’d love to know if you’ve tried out any of our top 10 favorites.
